The Cocos Island Bird Guide marks a significant milestone as the first photographic field guide exclusively dedicated to the birdlife of Costa Rica’s iconic Cocos Island and the surrounding waters of the Cocos Island Marine Conservation Area. This captivating volume offers a detailed ornithological profile of the island, featuring an in-depth overview of the 181 bird species confirmed to inhabit, migrate through, or occasionally appear in this remarkable oceanic ecosystem.
More than just a guide, this publication offers readers insight into the natural history, behaviors, and habitats of each species, while also highlighting the key locations for bird observation and research on the island. Enriched with over 500 high-quality historical and reference photographs, the guide serves as both a scientific resource and a visual journey through one of the country’s most remote and biodiverse regions.
Driven by a mission to foster birdwatching tourism and deepen the appreciation for avian biodiversity, the guide is the result of a five-year collaborative effort. Lead author Sergio Arias describes it as “a celebration of Cocos Island’s ornithological richness,” made possible thanks to the contributions of numerous researchers, birding enthusiasts, and conservation professionals affiliated with the Cocos Island Marine Conservation Area.
The project was supported by the National Birdwatching Board and the Costa Rica Birding Network and is now available for purchase on Amazon here or directly via WhatsApp at +506 8358 9938.
